The psychoanalytic theory of neurosis

Otto Fenichel (né le 2 décembre 1897 à Vienne; mort le 22 janvier 1946 à Los Angeles) était un psychanalyste.

Il a entamé ses études de médecine à Vienne en 1915. Fenichel est entré en contact étroit avec Sigmund Freud à un âge précoce et il a assisté à ses conférences de 1915 à 1919. En 1920, à l’âge de 23 ans, il devient membre de l’Association psychanalytique de Vienne. En 1922, Fenichel s’installe à Berlin, où il vécut jusqu’en 1933. Une plaque commémorative une plaque de verre de la série « Mit Freud à Berlin » fait référence à sa vie et à son travail depuis 2007. Fenichel a reçu sa formation spécialisée en neurologie et psychiatrie auprès de Bonhoeffer à Berlin et Cassirer à la Charité. En 1931, il publia une théorie en deux volumes des névroses ; plus tard élargi et mis à jour dans l’exil américain, ce travail a établi la réputation de Fenichel en tant qu’encyclopédiste de la psychanalyse.

En 1924, avec Harald Schultz-Hencke, Fenichel a fondé le séminaire pour enfants à l’Institut psychanalytique de Berlin, une association de jeunes analystes et de candidats à la formation consacrée à la discussion informelle. Pendant son séjour à Berlin, il a fondé un groupe informel de psychanalystes orientés vers le marxisme (1929). Lors de son émigration à Oslo en 1934, à Prague en 1935 et à Los Angeles en 1938, il organisa des contacts entre une dizaine de membres du groupe dispersés à travers le monde à l’aide de circulaires top-secrètes destinées uniquement à un cercle restreint. Elles font partie des documents les plus importants sur l’histoire problématique de la psychanalyse entre 1934 et 1945, en particulier sur le problème de l’exclusion de Freud de l’Association psychanalytique internationale de Wilhelm Reich, qui était initialement membre du groupe. Fenichel, qui en Europe a acquis une réputation de polyhistorien de la psychanalyse, “ne pouvait pas vraiment prendre pied dans la société américaine”.
